The history of the Herrnhuter Ethnology Museum is tightly connected with Herrnhut's history as centre of the worldwide social, educational and religious work of the protestant Brüder-Unität.

The first missionaries went in 1732 to West India, in 1733 to Greenland, in 1735 to Surinam, later to Africa, Asia, Australia and North-America. This way the collected witnesses of other cultures arrived in Herrnhut.

Exhibits from Tibet, South and East Africa, Surinam, Alaska, Greenland and Australia are shown in a permanent exhibition.
